Substations Volt Variation Optimization

Overview: The main objectives of the Volt Variation Optimization project included decreasing system-wide losses, minimizing distribution system and customer voltage variation, lessening maintenance and operating costs, reducing/deferring capital spending, and increasing the power delivery capacity of existing equipment. ZE Power Engineering completed designs for the upgrade of bus and feeder projection and control; the associated substation automation and communication; automatic control of transformer LTC; and the local and remote alarm, control, and indication systems, from the initiation to the construction phase. ZE Power Engineering also provided short circuit study analysis and protection coordination for new and existing relays, as well as programming, testing and validation of new protection scheme.

Consulting fees: $1.4 million

Substation services include the design and project management for projects up to 500 kV. ZE Power Engineering undertakes the full project spectrum from layout design, switching, protection and control and equipment specification. The company will meet the challenges of designing for existing stations or green field facilities for the full range of station types such as wood pole, metal tower, and compact design.
